Good advice for ATV riding technique

Good ATV riding technique starts with knowing your vehicle and choosing a riding style that suits your skills. This updated guide continues the topic from our previous article.

Get to know your ATV

Read the owner's manual for your specific model. Use it as a starting point for operation, tire pressure, load, and limitations. Practical training is essential; general advice does not replace practice and the model's instructions.

Before the ride

Check tire pressure, fluid levels, and the condition of the vehicle. Rectify any faults before riding. Wear a helmet, eye protection, gloves, and suitable protective clothing.

Smooth movements and good overview

Look at the terrain and plan your line. Adjust your speed to the visibility and grip. Use the throttle, steering, and brakes smoothly, especially on loose, uneven, or slippery surfaces. Avoid sharp turns.

Hills and slopes

Assess the hill before riding. Driving on slopes can increase the risk of tipping over. Follow the owner's manual's procedures and limitations for ascending and descending. Choose a different route if you are unsure.

Read more from the manufacturer

See Can-Am's guide on riding on different terrain and the manufacturer's safety information. The guide concerns technique; it does not grant permission to ride in a specific location.
